How Hot does a 175 MH lamp get?

Im working on a HM 175 watt system and Im just wondering how hot a 10K lamp gets. I am also wondering if the bulb should be in a housing with tempered glass in front of it. to protect the bulb and block UV rays.
help!

i just got a complete hqi setup with the double ended bulbs and they really dont get that hot. its on a 75 with dual 175's and i get maybe a 1 degree warmup while they are on and i leave them on for 8 hrs a day.

MH bulbs do get quite hot. It really depends on various factors including the bulbs themselves. I used to run 250w DE AB 10k bulbs and they got much hoter than my 250w DE Phoenix 14K bulbs. I've found that a few small fans can keep your temperature in check with out the need for a chiller. Good surface agitation helps as well. You don't need UV glass for 175w bulbs since they are SE. The glass on SE bulbs protect from UV. You only need UV glass with DE's.

Is the MH you using a SE or DE bulb? SE bulbs don't require any glass shield, but DE bulbs require the glass lens
