How Important are water changes?

This is the basic of all maintenance and is extremely important in having a healthy aquarium. Enuf said!
Nothing to do with algae growth!

are water changes once a month ok, especially say if youve had a 60 gallon salt fowlr setup for over 3 years and fish remain healthy and if so what %? if monthly

Water changes will help replenish minerals that have been depletes. It will also dilute the unwanteds in your tank, such as nitrates.
Once a month is better than never.

I agree with the above... about 20% per month is typical but IMO it really depends on the setup.
