how important is alkalinity? in fowlr?

i never ever tested for it... had a tank for 3 yrs, recently setup a 70 tall..

It is very important because alkalinity impacts the ability of the tank to maintain a stable pH. If your alkalinity is low, your pH can start to vary significantly...and that can cause stress and disease.

Not to steal the thead, but can alkalinity be too high? I mean does it raise pH, or just keep it stable werever it may be
