She's got a law degree, she's the first lady. And what is she doing?

FIRST LADY CAMPAIGNS INSIDE POLLING PLACE
Thu Oct 14 2010 16:19:25 ET
First lady Michelle Obama appears to have violated Illinois law -- when she engaged in political discussion at a polling place!
The drama began after Mrs. Obama stopped off at the Martin Luther King Center on the south side of Chicago to cast an early vote.
After finishing at the machine, Obama went back to the desk and handed in her voting key.
She let voters including electrician Dennis Campbell, 56, take some photos.
"She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband's agenda going," Campbell said.
According to a pool reporter from the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES at the scene, the conversation took place INSIDE the voting center, not far from the booths.
Illinois state law -- Sec. 17-29 (a) -- states: "No judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person shall, at any primary or election, do any electioneering or soliciting of votes or engage in any political discussion within any polling place [or] within 100 feet of any polling place."
A top Ilinois State Board of Elections official tells the DRUDGE REPORT that Mrs. Obama -- a Harvard-educated lawyer -- may have simply been ignorant of the law and thus violated it unintentionally.
"You kind of have to drop the standard for the first lady, right?" the official explained late Thursday. "I mean, she's pretty well liked and probably doesn't know what she's doing."
WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS ELECTIONEERING
When questioned about the brazen nature of Mrs. Obama's campaigning, press secretary Robert Gibbs defended the action.
"I don't think it would be much to imagine, the First Lady might support her husband's agenda," Gibbs smiled.

So his wife isn't perfect either LOL! Not a huge deal, fairly common mistake by political neophytes.

It just blows my mind. Every time I've ever been to a polling place, there is 100's of signs, and 4-5 local candidates politicing. you keep walking then you see this little sign that says you are entering a polling place no campaigning beyond this point. Then their is peaceful nothing. She's literally a professional politician. Claiming ignorance makes me want to scream.

The lady was voting and a person stopped her to chat...some people took a picture and she mentioned it was important to vote and I'm sure other things were said besides. She is a famous person and people flock to them, and naturally ask questions or talk about what they are sure the famous person likes to discuss, so they discussed politics. The whole thing took a few minutes as she was trying to leave.
Obama is not up for the vote, so I don't think she was campaigning for her husband. When you don’t like someone…nothing they do is ever good enough and every little possible infraction is scrutinized. I am not into politics and I personally didn’t vote for Obama…It just seems some things are not worth the bother and this is one of them.

The woman REALLY should know the law, she happens to be married to a rather high ranking politician. You'd think she wouldn't make that kind of a mistake. I don't think it really rises to something like cigs for votes or standing in front of a polling place with a night stick. I see it as more of a teaching moment for everyone. It may seem like a dumb law but it is the law and it even applies to the political elite.

See I disagree, I think it shows a blatent disrespect to the electoral process. A fundamental tenant of our country. But I come from a family where my grandparents wear suit and tie to go vote, and were in more hushed reverence than when they walk into church. (which in their case is a LOT of hushed reverence.)
