i know your young and trying to learn, but you should learn and research a fish befroe you impulse buy..so then you wont have to run into any problems in the long run

Minimum I would recommend for a dog face would be 2-3 inch, 75 - 80G, I personaly had 2. They just dont do well in a small space with other fish.

Sorry, but I feel bad for your Dog Face.
You need to read before you buy. A Dog Face Puffer should never be in a 30 gallon tank, so to answer your question, you should upgrade tomorrow.
I get the impression you're young, which means two things.
1: You are learning and will make mistakes like we all have.
And
2: You most likely do not have the funds to upgrade like you say you'd like to.
You may see a big fish in a small tank is the LFS but that does not mean it can survive in your small tank.
I would honestly return the Puffer as soon as you can, and get a credit towards something else. No matter how much you like the fish, you'll feel worse watching it become stressed, covered in ich and waste away, and I assure you this is what will happen.

I am not to sure about getting smothered in ich and wasting away. But I do no in time it will outgrow your tank and become really stressed and torment your tankmates. When is your bd? Lol. But really, upgrade as soon as possible or return the puffer.

Well considering he stated that his porcupine puffer recently died of ich, (another fish that never should have been in a 30 gallon) I'm willing to bet any amount of money that if this Dog Face is left in this tank for another week, it will have ich.
Ich is almost surely still present in his tank, and the Puffer is obviously becoming more stressed every minute. The immune system is probably already shot, and those spots will show up in no time. Fact.
This fish will never have a chance at outgrowing this tank. It will be dead soon.

i dont think hes stressed cause hes eating so much and the ick on the porcupine
(only the puffer not any other fish) was about a year ago i think hes fine for now but if any thing does go wrong i will get the tank right away and set it up let it cycle and after a
little while things will go good(i hope)

once you buy the fish hes stuck with you they have a no return policy and that sucks really bad

So wait until he's stressed and sick, then come up with the money for a large tank, then go out and buy it and set it up, and then let it cycle, then move the Dog Face into the new system and everything will go back to normal.
Perfect plan.
If we haven't made it clear in previous posts, how about this:
YOUR DOG FACE PUFFER WILL DIE IF YOU DON'T TAKE HIM BACK TO THE FISH STORE.

You already said he looks stressed. The tank you have is not suitable for ANY Dog Face Puffer. You need to stick with a few Damsels in that size of a tank.
Research as much as you can, then upgrade your tank size in time. But please don't continue to be irresponsible and careless at the expense of the fish.

Take the fish back and give it to them. They will take it for free.
Yes you lose the money, but at least the fish has a chance to live.
You also need to find a new fish store. The one you go to is very bad.

I think you guys are being a bit harsh. This is a trying hobby and the more you try the more you learn. I agree he should have reaserched the fish first and that his tank s to small for a puffer. BTW if you really want a puffer and are really going to upgrade, tray a valentini puffer, much smaller, better looking in IMO and will be better off in a 30 then your dogfaced. Next time you want to impulse buy ask the store to hold onto the fish and then reaserch it.

I agree that Whitey is being a bit harsh. People will stop seeking good advice if it comes with a slap in the face and a cold scowl every time.
surfin, do you happen to have any friends with a larger tank?
Giving the fish back might not be such a bad idea. You could also make a post in the classified section of this site.
Hopefully you can upgrade very soon. I've seen fish survive much worse odds than a 30 gallon tank for a few months. You'll need a heavy upgrade though. 100 gallon mark or so. Still would be better if you could get rid of it sooner.

whitey isnt bieng harsh he is only trying to help, this kid had a fish die already from the same thing, and also if you look at his other posts this is what lead whitey to be a little more aggressive in his response this time. I mean its one thign to try to learn and another to post and not listen to people. And now it sounds like he is not only going to keep the puffer but he also thinks its doing very well in that tank... :notsure: the upgrade thing is o.k but he is 9 years old ?? where is he oing to get that money for that 100 gallon tank at 9?

I would say keep the df until you get a bigger tank, when I was first starting out and didn’t know much and the LFS told me he would be fine in a 40 gallon and he was but now that I know about all of these websites and allot more about fish I would say they are happier in a large tank. He was fine for about a year then I upgraded, he didn’t grow that much in the year I had him. He was very happy and had lots of personality. He actually died when he got in the bigger tank. But try and upgrade as soon as possible. allot of people on here are a little obsessive about the size of a tank, I know the tanks they come from are smaller than a 30 and I’ve seen df in tanks at the pet store for a very long time and do just fine, and i know they are just temp housing for the fish but they do alot of the time stay in there for a long time. Just wondering what kind of filter system do you have, and before anyone try’s and bash me, this is from experience not what everyone has herd. And this is MY OPINION!

i dont know what filration i have but it sucks i have a ton of live rock but if he doesnt
eat it the damsel usuallly demolishes the left overs and if neither of of them get it i just grab it out but the puffers lucky i saw a 4 inch unduliate and 4 inch piccaso trigger in a
5 gallon tank i was gonna say put a trigger in a differant tank but that was a old pet store i used to go to but they wouldnt listen to a 9 year old but the one i go to now actually listen to 9 year olds

but every single pet store around here has a policy that once you buy the fish hes your problem they wont even take him for free so i have to keep him hes healthy though hes
sleeping eating playing i actually rescuded him cause there was a mono fish that kept
swiming around him so he was trapped in his layer of doom but theres not even a white spot on him but every time i walk up to the tank hes either thanking me for taking
him out of the tank at the pet store with the mono or begging for food

Thanks PSU for backing me up.
Those of you saying I was harsh obviously haven't read all this kid's posts on this topic.
He just stated that his filtration isn't any good. Yet he still has this poor Dog Face in a 30 gallon until he can upgrade.
Give me a break. I don't care how young you are, it doesn't excuse being careless with your fish keeping. I started off by kindly stating that he needs to research first before buying, and return this fish.
I guarantee
you, if you take this Puffer back to the store and it is still healthy which you claim, they will take it back for free. If it has already become sick which is very likely, then maybe they won't.
Those of us who are obsessive about tank size are the ones that have success in this hobby. I don't believe telling someone that a 30 gallon is too small for a Dog Face Puffer is being obsessive about tank size. It's called basic saltwater knowledge.
