How long can corals go without light?

I've been keeping my lights off for a few days to help battle a hair algae problem. What's the longest I should go without turning the lights on. Does turning the lights off really help hair algae?

I know that this does not answer your question, but perhaps this could help
through the years we would have times where unwanted algea would take over, and then we made this sweet little filtration called a turf scrubber. I dont have time to take pictures right now as i am leaving to go to the long beach aquarium for the day, but when i get home ill be more willing to take some pictures.
also, do u have a sump? b.c a sump is necessary in order to put in a turf scrubber.
 
since we have added one ( its a DIY project ) we have never had a problem with unwanted algea
