How long can U shut off sump??

How long can you turn off the sump and not effect the bacterio growing on your bio balls? 1hr? 2hr? 30minutes? If you wanted to mount say a float switch or do some modiciations, how much time do I have???

Just dont let the bio-ball dry out. Pour water over them occasionally while you work.

I have heard many diferent opinions on this,but I would not push more than an hour or two without at least pouring tank water over them....
