THey were beautiful and I couldnt resist. I picked up a nice rock the sized of 2 baseballs, covered in GSP. THey were so vibrant I had to have them. $70, and I talked him down to $50. Its about a 6x9 patch of GSP so I feel I go tmy moneys worth, especially since they were so much brighter than others in the same tank.
I floated them for 30min and dumped them in.
Been about 30 min,. I was curious how long it takes for them to open up? I have them under a 250W MH atm, and a Korella 4powerhead about 10" away, and 6" above blowing directly parallel.

got any pics? Mine took a couple hours to open. By the next day it was fully opened.

Yeah mine took a day or so and now its on a tear!
I have also followed your "Budget" tank thread from the very begining and I have to say everything has turned out great so far Nep! I really like the foam wall you did, i will definatly do something like that when I upgrade.
Quick question about it, in your research about it how long do they typically last? Does the saltwater breakdown the foam at all? By the way congrats on the GSP.

Good question. I cant answer fully.
However,
It is coated with epoxy, that gives it a very durable layer of skin. I spoke with a lady last week about her build that I followed, its almost 3 years old now. So I would call that relatively mature, she said it was doing great and a the filtration it provides is absolutely fantastic.
This technique is still relatively new, so long term I don't know how to predict, but I do know that I used UV protected pond foam which is specifically made to prevent UV decay for use in fish ponds.

There are too many factors to answer your Q. All anyone can do is tell you thier experiences.
When I had GSP they opened up in about an hour or two. They just......grew. Like the xenia I just had to have. No more. I got rid of that too.

Hope so, its now 10hours later, they aren't opening up. My water params are pretty good:
Salinity= 1.025
Ammonia= 0
Nitrite= .5
Nitrate= .1
PH= 8.2
Iodine= 0
Alkalinity meq/L= 4
Calcium= 450
Silicates= 8
Phosphates= 0
Temperature= 78 degrees(maybe I could bump this up to 80)
Any thoughts besides temp? 10hours later and they are still closed. Been under a MH all day.

One you first get a new coral it is best to keep the lights off a good while when you introduce them to the tank. Most places say 8 hours but I usually do it till my next day's cycle. Might be why they haven't opened up yet esp. if your halides are more light than what they are use to.

wow I took the opposite approach. I transported them home under a direct beam of sunlight in the car. Then I put them in the tank under the MH thinking they would love the light. I shut them off last night. Ill try turning on the lights now. Think I damaged them?
sigh....the stuff you learn the hard way.

Also could you be more specific about the way you aclimated them to your tank?
Is that is all you did, float them and dump them?
Did you dump the bag water into your tank?
What salinity do they run the tank at where you bought them?
What do they use for lighting?
How high up in the tank were they when you bought them?

When I got mine half of the rock was out of water cause the bag they put it in kept braking. JMO but I think they MIGHT be ok but I would put them in the lowest place in the tank to get them used to your lights. then start moving them up in the tank where you want them, again JMO

I floated the bag 30 min. The store owner owner told me 20. My salanity is the same as thiers, 1.025
After 20min I put the rock in the bottom of my tank, and had a power head aimed about 6" above the rock, paralell to it. I turned on the MH and left. Last night I turned it off and put on the purple actinic.
They use T5's, and the lights were about 18" away from the GSP.
This morning I put some rods fish food in a turkey baster and drizzled some on. A dozen or so small starfish came out of the cracks in the rock but otherwise no activity. Ill ask the LFS owner what he thinks.

I turned on the MH in the middle of the tank, instead of the one directly over them. I also turned off the power head that was in their corner. I hope this works better today.

I raised them up about 8"
I think my MH are due for a change, very dim. The T5 seems about 3x as bright. I got them both on right now. I don't understand, even though they are so dim, they put out the heat. My tank is 80 degrees, from the 78 norm it stays at, even under the T5's.
Still, I would expect to see at least an attempt at opening up. How can you tell if they are dead? Its the third day now and still no activity.
Also I been putting mixed fish food shrimp/meat in a turky baster and letting some drizzle onto them.
good idea? Bad idea?

ive been reading around. evidently it can take up to a couple weeks for them to open up. and they are pretty tough to kill, so If it was open in the store, and My water is good. then chances are they are perfectly fine, and I have to be really really patient.

Just waiting for that happy post that all is well...I tore a huge piece of GPS off of one rock and glued it to another...it opened before the day was up...
...I waited a week for it to open when I got it, and here I am ripping it up like a carpet and it is all open and happy.
