How long should lights be on?

I have a 20W NO Flor. light in my 30 gallon tank. I've recently had problems with cyanobacteria, and I read that leaving on the light (I never turn it off) can cause this.
How long should I leave the light on for each day?
Also, I've been treating with Kent Poly Ox, but I'm having limited success. The cyano has slowed down its growth rate, yet it continues to grow. Any suggestions? I have two snails that eat it, but the tend to stay on the rocks and avoid the substrate.

depending on your lighting system is how you can set the lights....but over all the tank lights at MAX should only be on for 12 hours a day....i run my power compacts for 12 and my mh's with them for 3 hours....
10am lights turn on first compacts
12pm lights come on (second compacts)
5 pm MH's kick in
8 pm MH's shut off
9 pm second compacts shut off
10pm first compacts shut off
10:05 Night LED's come on for lunar light affect
but again remember they are LED's ...it just gives the tank a very dim blue look.....not used to grow anything...

My VHO is on for 10 hrs. My MH is on for 6 hrs.
In the tropics, lights are avail for ~12 hours. However, the intensity is very low at the begining and end.
