I don't consider any tank under a year "established". simply because during the first 6-8 months micro fauna bacteria algae's etc are all still reaching an equilibrium, waxing and waning in populati9on and diversity. often though if you are looking to place an animal that's care states "requires an established tank" 6 months is fine as long as you're not making a lot of changes in those times.
other peoples views may differ, which is fine this is just my take on it. it really boils down to regularity. if you set up a maintenance schedule and don't vary it your tank is going to become established faster than a tank that receives irregular care because the irregular tanks conditions are constantly in a state of flux, if you tank is stable for several months you are fairly safe to consider it established enough for all but the most ultimately demanding animals.
I agree...it takes at least one year for everythiong to balance itself out and go through all the stages and build a good funtioning ecosystem.
As I understand it.....The reason critters "need an established tank" is because they don't do well in any kind of change. So water and trace elements need to be very stable for them or they die. Tank raised fish and corals do better then wild caught. The critters from the ocean for example have never been around a sudden change in PH or SG...nothing in their world changes within days, weeks or months...
