How long to run lights?

How long do you guys run your lights during the day? I have PC lighting, and I have been running them from 9a to 9p. I am getting a diatom outbreak, and am wondering if maybe that is contributing to it.
Thanks-
Phil

i run my lights 12 hrs a day your gonna get outbreaks especially if your still cycling in which case when you get snails and hermits they will take care of it.

Well you shouldnt run your lights 12 hours, you should run them to 10 hours and thatll slow down everything until your tank stabilizises. But dont run your lights 12 hours a day run them 10 hours.

12 hours is fine. If you have any algae issues etc. it's because you have poor water quality. If you are still cycling, you will see a diatom outbreak and then an algae bloom, which is completely natural.
By the way, hermit crabs and snails do not eat silicate (glass) shells of the diatoms. The diatoms will naturally loose their source of silicate in the water and go away. If you used a silica based sand for your substrate, you will ALWAYS have bad diatoms.
I hope this helps.

+1. algae is not caused by lights it just helps grow what is already there. so if you dont have any algae problems then your lights are not going to start any

I usually run them 8-10 hours and as stated the conditions have to be right for algae to take hold lights are just one of the contributing factors.
