I am doing a diy wet/dy filter and need to know how many bio balls i need. What is the rule of thumb on how many gallons of bio balls per gallons of water?
Also has any one used a standard pool water pump for their fish tank?
Thanks

before you submerge your bio balls.. none of them should be submerged at all.. if you are using a wet/dry.. fill the water to just above the top of your return pump... mark the water level on the side of your wetdry filter.. *mark1
then unplug your return pump and wait until all the water has drained and syphoned back into the wet/dry.. then mark the water level... *mark2
measure the difference between *mark1 and *mark2 this is your overflow capacity needed..
let's say its 3" inches...
So look at your wet/dry... find the spot where the first water will spill over... Then go about 5" below that... 3" for overflow.. and 2" just for comfort.. then mark this spot.. (5" below spill line) and mark it with a big blue line.. this is the fill line for your sump... erase the other 2 lines and use this one as a max fill line.. then mark a line about 2~3" lower as your "refill" line.. then when it hits the "refill" line just top the tank off with RO water, and stop at the blue line and you will maintain a good water level and salinity.. dont worry about the ball's being wet.. if you use a prefilter to spread the water in the top of the wet/dry then almost all the balls will have water.. but make sure your wont overflow in a power failure. this applies to ANY sump.. not just a wet/dry filter..
