I have a 58g now with LR and 6 fish and have been told that it is over stocked. I just got my new 100g(I thought it was a 125g) How many fish can I stock in the new tank??

That depends on the fish and your setup. Don't use the inches per gallon rule as a 5 inch trigger will produce more waste then 5 1inch firefish.
The trick is to find a balance, and remember that most fish we get are babies most of the time. A 2 inch trigger may be 10inches fully grown.
A well filtered/skimmed tank will handle more safely but when things go wrong in an overstocked tank, it can get out of control and crash a whole lot faster.
Frequent testing can help guide you.

The general rule does go by inches per gallon.Of course every time this is brought up,usually there are about 5 different "rules".And I am really not sure what fender is getting at besides wait to see how much your fish is going to excreet, but I was always told, your tank will tell you when its had enough.I guess meaning one of your fish will die,I don't know.Anyway,is it 4:20 yet?

What I am trying to get at is that there is no hard and fast rule. There are just too many variables. Like Goby said your tank will tell you. I.E. too high a nitrates that will not decrease or require a lot of filtering, heavy skimming, refugium with macro algae, just to put a small dent in the numbers. Fish constantly fighting for space. One fish always kicking the bucket.
Your tank will always seek a balance with or without your help. If you overstock, eventually things will start dying until a balance is reached. The trick is to find the balance without pushing it to the limit.
Every tank is different, and it depends on what fish you have/plan to keep. A tank full of gobies will not stress the system as much as a tank full of a more aggressive messy eaters. A tank with a ton of LR/DSB/Heavy Skimming/Refugium/etc can handle a heavier load than a system that has just a mechanical filter. But if the power goes out for a few hours you could be toast.
I know that I am probably not helping you much, why don't you give a run down of what you have and what you want and a more educated answer can be presented.........

Umm, I think the biggest problem you're going to have is with the tangs, they get pretty big and most of your fish are going to get bigger.
What you have now would probably fit nicely in the 125.
Not sure about the emporer tho.
Anyone else?

JWT,
I'm really glad that there are people like you are willing to help us rookies. I guess need to tak to my LFS to see if they will take my tangs :( I wish that they would have told me that was over stocking. They knew had and said that they would all be fine. I really hate to lose the Lipstick it is my favorite and my daughter's It is a great looking fish. But I do understand what you are saying. he two tangs were in the 100g before it got broke down.
Now if thin out the 58g(take out the Two tangs) can I over time turn that tank into areef tank?
What type of substrate should I put in the new tank?? CC or LS??
My LFS said not to ude LS. But so far they haven't really led me in the right direction. They allready helped me over stock!!
I'm still seeking any guidence you may have
