 I just recently purchased a 35 gallon hexagon tank and I wanted to convert it from freshwater to saltwater, but still not too sure due to costs etc....well i was just wondering how many saltwater fish I would be able to put in this tank without it being too crowded?

Depends on what species you pick.. I wouldnt plan on more than 3 to 4 inches of fish.. Which means probably one or two small fish....

hmmm, thought the general rule of thumb was about an inch of fish per gallon. Of course common sense would have to come first ie..no tangs, mandrins (yet), etc.
I think you could have to say 4-5 small/med fish. Our first 30 gallon had a clown, 2 firefish and flame angel. Keep in mind it was as FOWLR.

1 inch of fish per gallon is acceptable for a fresh water set up. The general rule of thumb for salt is 1 inch of FULL GROWN fish per 5 gallons

Just a thought, but... arent hex tanks usually taller? If the rule of fw applies, isnt the gas/surface air exchange less than your standard rectangular tank, therefore limiting the amount of fish even more? Not sure myself, as Im still a sw newbie...
:notsure:

I have the same tank, and have learned a couple lessons since I've started this hobby.
First, you do have less oxygen exchange because of the smaller surface area. I have a biowheel filter and powerhead, and that seems to do the trick.
You can't go crazy with the fish, because the tank will not support the bioload. But 2-4 smaller, peaceful species will work.
