I wouldn't recommend putting in a damsel,as when you add new fish the damsel will chase and maybe even kill it.( I have experienced this,my damsel killed my gramma)The only type of damsel I'd recommend is the species Chromis, but they prefer to be in groups. If you really want a dasmel,be careful by what you add, because their almost impossible to remove unless you take out all lr(like i had to).Think it over.
In a 65 gallon if you go by the 1" of fish per 5 gallons you could add a total of 13"of fish max,or about 5 mall fish whose max size is 3" or less.Or you could add 2-3 fish whose max size is 5".(You the point)Just dont add a fish whose max size is like 15+".because oyu could tell the diff.if you had one 15" fish compared to 5 3" fish.

In my PERSONAL opinion... going by the inch rule with SW tanks is not good. It all depends on what you are adding. If you are going community, you tend to be able to put more fish in. If you are going aggressive, drop the number down. Problem is how big the fish will get when full grown too. Keeping them in a tank just because "they will grow to it" is unacceptable and cruel. It is like you being forced to stay in your bedroom forever.
Aggressives eat different types of food than community fish, and more of it. In turn they are more messy and waste will be a big consideration. That cuts down on the number of fish. NEVER go with the one inch rule when going aggressive SW. Base it on the other factors.
Now, community fish you can get away with more because they are smaller and eat less. It all depends.
Give us some thoughts on what you want in the tank.
Remember the saying "better safe than sorry"
In saltwater you can add on "because you will kill fish and lose lots of money if you don't."
Just a thought.

Any of these fish would be fine in a 65: dwarf angels, hawkfish, wrasse, clownfish, blennies, gobies, basslet, butterflies(very hard to keep), porcupinefish, small puffer, small to med lionfish, cardinalfish, pseudochromis.
Tangs generally need a 4 ft long tank (check out my question on yellow tangs near the bottom of the page)
If you want an inch rule go by 1/2 inch per gallon. I have found this to be faily accurate in community fowlr. Also the better filtration you have the more bioload you can support. If you want a lot of fish it would be a good idea to get a protein skimmer. Also when calculating inches use the fish's full size ex. Flame Angelfish: 4 inches

I dont want to stir up any debate over 1/2 inch per gallon just what works for me. For example in my 20L fowlr i have 2 false percs, bicolor blenny, and a hawkfish. That is a little more than 10 inches but they are thriving so it really depends on your tank.
