I have 5 in my 47g tall.
2 -clowns (2.5" and 1.5")
1 -lawnmower blennie (3")
1 -4 striped Damsel (1.5")
1 -Strawberry Chromis (1.5")
I think I'm maxed out...just to be on the safe side.
It all depends on what you want. Definitely do not get tangs or triggers in a tank that size.
5 fish is a good number to have.
A pair of clownfish, a goby, a royal gramma, and maybe a firefish are nice ideas.
