If you don't have any nuisance algae problems, then 12 hours of lighting is fine. The lights are on over my tank for 10 hours (unsupplemented MH).

10 hours total... 8 hours on the MHs and two hours for the actinics. 20k MH unsupplemented...
12:00 noon VHO Actinics on
1:00pm VHO Actinics off
1:00pm MHs on
9:00pm MHs off
9:00pm VHO Actinics on
10:00pm VHO Actinics off
The MHs and VHOs overlap about 10 minutes... 5 minutes at lights on and 5 minutes at lights off.

Whats the benefit of having the dawn and dusk setup on the light timers? i have never done that and my animals have done great. would they do even better with having the lighting setup like that? i had custom sealife pcs on my one tank for the past couple years, they don't sell these lights anymore so i went to coral life and i got a dual daylight bulb and a purple with a actinic bulb. ever since i got them my tank has alot of alage problems. what to do?

It is supposed to be less stressful on the corals and fish... giving them time to adjust (wake up) before getting blasted with full intensity lighting.

I run my VHO actinics (2x110 watt) about 10 hrs a day and my 2x400 watt 10K's about 6 hrs a day. I like to start out slow with new MH bulbs and increase the time as the bulbs get older..
