I would start with 18 to 20 in the display and 4 lbs. of rubble in the filter compartments. Get a few larger pieces to create a base and some smaller ones on top of that to create caves and such.

go to your LFS and get a 20 lb bag of live sand. In my 55 I have 60 lbs of Nature's Ocean reef ready sand (getting more soon) and I will never get anything else. It is great! I have all little creatures on the glass and it is really LIVE. So thats what I reccomend and if you get that, you will have a good sandbed started. you will need more to get sand sifters but that will definately get you started.

oh yeah as for the other reply, live rock is a GREAT idea. almost a must. it is the best filtration and will really help out cycling your tank. as for the nano, they are great. I had a 24 but found a 55 2 days later and now am trying to sell the 24. hey if you want to upgrade to the 24, I am selling it. haha just a thought but yeah if you get 20 lbs of ls and 12-24 lbs of live rock for the 12, you will definately be started and your tank will be looking great. Those nano cubes are awesome!!!
