I have a 10k metal halide bulb but I forgot how many watts it was. Its approximately 11.5" long. I went to the fish store and the guy told me the watts depends on how long the bulb was and according to him mine is 400 watts. I dont remember it being that high but just to make sure can someone tell from looking at it in the picture below.

There's no way to know. The length might be different, but I think not. But, I dunno?
I take it you don't know what the ballast is that's firing it? Are you looking to replace the bulb? One way you could determine is to get a kill-a-watt. And plug the ballast with the bulb s-c-r-e-w-e-d in and see what the kill-a-watt says.

Some bulbs have the wattage stamped on the mogul base. It would be right by the edge of the glass if so.
+1
I remember seeing them when I was looking at GFCI's
and just through it out there my 250 is about 9.5in

just to be on the safe side, I decided to buy the 250 watt 14k bulb. I figure 400 watt would be too much for a 55 gallon anyways.

look up the model number of your ballast, it will tell you what size bulb you need, if you cant find the info contact the manufacturer.

You need to determine what size your ballast is, reef's right the model number and a little googling and you will know. Anyways, you can t just interchange bulb sizes, it doesn't work that way. Just to be on the safe side, DONT USE THAT BULB UNTIL YOU DETERMINE THE BALLAST SIZE.
A little googling goes a long way.......
