How many years can a tank last?

How long has everyone had there tanks?
I was at the LFS a couple days ago and asked him the question!
"How long do tanks last"????
I cant remember the exact year I got my tank (I am guessing 8-10 years ago)....anyways He said 20years! But Hexagons are known to "blow out"!!

So, how do you know when to replace/switch over to a new one?

I have a buddy with a 13 year old set up. Its unreal. I can try and take some pictures. Mostly corals. Same sand same rock. Same tank. Same spot 13 years.

i bet the carpet under the stand is super clean compared to the rest of the room

one way to tell if mayby its getting to old is to have a look at the material used to seal the edges. does it still looks smooth and uniform, or craked/nicked/worn/frayed.
not that i know alot about it but i imagine even if your seals looked worn you could always apply more sealant or strip it and redo it, i assume anyways. and as far as the glass or whatever goes as long as there are no noticable cracks you are good to go.
i would say a fish tank if well built and maintained would most likley last virtually forever, or at least until you were sick of looking at it and wanted somethign new. kinda like a car engine or a shower/bath, windows etc, when the seals wear out you replace them or repair them and your good to go. like i said im no expert thoguh hahah just my thoughts

thats funny. when he set it up he took the carpet up from that spot and the stand looks as though its built into the ground and wall. Its not a huge tank. 125 gallon. Its more tall than long.

The newer sealants on quality tanks should outlast most of us. My tanks will certainly outlast my bank account.

I had a 55g freswater tank that I bought with my first summer job while in college...I'm guessing summer of 91-92. It moved with me to 3 states, always set-up and I just sold it in 06 and it was still running without any problems.
So 15yrs + with no leaks or resills.
