with a 30 gal sump? it might sound odd but with the extra water what should be the fish limit? 3? 4? i was just curious on what everyone thought thanks!
yeah but dont count the sump unless you are going to put fish in it.
the reason for the sump is more of a filtration method and isolation. count your actual display gallons for the fish. certain fish need more room even though they will fit in a 29. I would look towards clowns ,gobies, and maybe cardinals. things like that will fit in a 29 most other fish would be cramped as adults.

having the extra gallons in the sump will help with water quality but you are still looking at a few small fish, because there just isn't much room to swim in a 29gal.
i'm going to try a perc clown, royal gramma, banggai cardinal, red scooter blenny - i have a tall 26 gallon - lousy tank choice on my part, but making the best of it for now.
Only a few small fish would fit in there, but a 29 can make a great reef tank. Ask Ryebread to see some pictures of his old 29. It was pretty slick.

A red scooter blenny has no chance of survival in a tank that small. It eats pods just like mandarin fish.
A better choice IMO, but still . . . . a LMB has a VERY high metabolism rate meaning that he eats a lot which in turn leads to . . . . well . . . you get the idea.

If it were me, thats what I would do. A LMB could live successfully in a 29 gallon tank without a doubt. However, they are much better suited for bigger tanks. A possible alternative may be a goby of some sort. There are a lot of really neat gobies out there. Or possibly an ornamental shrimp.

I vote for three fish that get 2 to 3 and a half inches full grown. About one fish this size per ten gallons of water is about all. Four fish in this size tank is pushing it, but maybe with small peacful fish and the large sump and good filtration, and frequent maintanence you could handle 4 in a twenty nine.
Good luck, Lesley
How many you wish to put in your tank may also depend a bit on the temperment of the species, also consider what height in the water column will they be living in. How much space to you plan on having after all the rock and sand are in place. You have a sump with lots of LR in it, it should increase the pod population
How about a bi-color blenny? I have had one in my 30 gal tank for about a year. He is my favorite fish. I also have a firefish and a percula clown. All get along well and are very healthy.
