I am getting ready to buy a 125 gal.
How much lighting would I need (MH) for my tank?
I want to put SPS and fish in there. Nothing too expensive....
how much does this cost?
What do you think of VHO lighting?

I like VHO lighting a lot.
You say that you want to put SPS in there, but nothing too expensive. Well that is a little contradictory because most SPS corals are the most expensive out there. They also require metal halide lighting, whereas softies and LPS does not.
If you are doing SPS corals, you will probably look into investing $500-700 in a light system. If you are doing SPS, I would do a metal halide as well as some supplemental VHO's.

I guess I got mixed up. Not so much interested in SPS. Like the soft corals though. How many watts do you recommend?

I would look towards getting about 400-500 watts of lighting over a 125. You would be able to do most soft corals and many LPS corals under that.

Geeze, I'm having 500watts going in my 90G bowfront and that's all he's getting for his 125.

If I were you I would get a canopy and put 3- 250 watt mh's with 15k bubls, cost around $400 if shop around for brand new lighting with bulbs. That'll give you 750 watts of mh and you can have anything!

Yeah, you could always do that, or get higher wattage lights, but that is going to cost more and the reason I did not recommend that is because knhs said he did not want too spend much. If I was going to set-up a reef, I would do halides. That's me though.

15k's NEEDS supplement lighting!!! I would go with 20k's instead and cut out the supplement period. I'm getting into the XM 20k's right now, I saw one at the reef club meeting last week, it was very nice. I like the looks of it. I'll still run my 14k's with Super Actinics Supplement, that'll be my grow out tank. :happyfish
By the way, 3-250w MH retros for $400?? Where did you find that at?
