thats a good question, is there a general guid line were suppose to go by to determine how much water flow is good in a certain size aquarium?

I have a koralia 2 and 4 in my 30 gallon bowfront. The K4 seems like a lot, so I turn it on and off depending on the time of day (auto-timer), and the K2 is always on. K2 - 600gph, K4 - 1200gph. I have 2 backup powerheads, a 106gph and a 400gph that used to be in the tank.

It also depends on what you have in your tank. Some things are like kids --- they want rough and tumble, like a surf washing back and forth, while other things are like old farts - - they want slow and easy with no change of direction.
General rule of thumb is that you add up the actual GPH of everything you have that moves water. If it's less than 280 GPH (10 x 28), go clean your dentures. If it's more than 560 GPH (20 x 28), you're probably a surfer-dude yourself.
Actual GPH of your sump or closed loop pump depends on the number of twists and turns in your pipes, plus how far up the water has to be pumped.

I hear the rule is 10-20x the gallons. So a 28 gallon tank should get around 280 to 460 gph.
That's for FO or FOWLR
Reef tanks need 30-50x
depending on the size of course. the larger the tank...the higher the turnover is acceptable.
