I used a small scale to measure the salt before and fiqured the mixture by weight, but my scale is lost and I need to do a water change. The salt doesn't say how many cups per gallon. I thought it was 1 cup per gallon, is this right?

Judging by weight is not a good way to go.If the salt mix has been exposed to humid air it will be heavier. I always mix it up a little low, then test the specific gravity and add small ammounts till it's perfect...

With instant ocean or reef crystals I start off with 1/2 cup per gallon test SG and then add a little at a time until I reach the desired SG reading.

Most mix packages say approx 1/2 cup of salt per gal, however, you must have an instrument to measure SG. Hold off the maintenace til you can get the appropriate equiptment to do this right.

thanks everyone, now I have a better idea. I had the perfect way to measure the salt for the amount I needed, but like I said I can't find my little scale.
