It depends on how deep of a sand bed you want. I used 1 lb per gallon. And that gave me about a 2" deep sand bed.

+1 2" is good imo...much more and you can run into nitrate issues unless going to a DSB around 6" mark. This is what I have read anywho.
Brand does not really matter much IMO. Depends on what you want really. Color, grain size, some hold PH better than others...I personally look for cheap :). I got black sand for my last tank, and I really like it...now I want to switch my others.

I tend to steer from "live sand"...to me I don't really get how "live" it can be after being packaged and shipped and sitting on a shelf. Just me...but I would save the money and get a cup or two of sand from an existing tank to kick start the bacteria if this is the motive.
Oh but it is not bad....just my preference.

It was more a deal of having sand.. i was told it was a good brand to use in the tank
thats why i went with it.. not so much for getting bacteria growing.
Would the live rock help with bacteria?

Definitely
. You really don't need anything per se to get bacteria. Start with a little amonia, and time will give you bacteria. Some people don't like to wait for a cycle so they buy live everything to skip ahead...I have heard it works but it's pricey. Live rock is great though. The more the better IMO.
