kinda tuff question. but i have atleast 2 inches or more in depth of sand in mine, if you get jawfish ur gonna need about 8 cm or 3.1 inches of depth, but that might be over doing it, id do 2 inches depth.

okay, thanks for the answer, maybe you can help me out with a quick calculation. How much sand would i need for that in a 55 gal tank? Also, would i be able to add more sand at a later time if i feel like adding more?

For a DSB (deep sand bed) you need at least 5-6 inches of sand. A DSB will help keep nitrates low in your tank. this provides an area of anaerobic bacteria to thrive. That is what i have in my 28 gallon. I have around 120# of sand. In a 55 gallon I would reccomend 200# of sand for a DSB.

i have been told from local lfs that a general rule of thumb for how much sand to use is one lb for every gallon of water. so 55 gallons go with about 50 lbs, i have used it in my 100 gallon tank, i figure i have about 80 to 90 gallons of water in it so i put about 80 lbs of sand and i am satisfied it gives me about 2 inches of depth. but you can use sand at your discretion, if you have a rectangular shaped tank then i think that one lb per gallon will give you roughly 2 inches of depth , based solely on my past experience. hope that helps.

another little side note, this site has been my addiction for about the last month... might not be too healthy, but man is it fun:D
