i'd say once a day but make sure they dont get skinny.be sure to give the tangs some algae sheets to graze on. if those tangs are in your 40 thats not such a good idea.

Tangs are a high bioload, plus they are not supposed to be in a tank that small unless they are small. Even if you got them really small, they will outgrow that size of tank very quickly? How many and what kind of tangs do you have? The puffer is also a very high bioload. You may want to feed less often so that the bioload does not skyrocket and make your tank cycle again.

tangs need LOTS of swimming room and some people will say that 55-75 is minimum for tangs but for a certain few 100+ is reccomended

First of all, I have to say you have way too many fishes in there. Tangs need frequent feedings, which means they will put lots of strain on your filtration system. Twice a day sounds most reasonable to me, as well.

ummm WOW, ok well I guess I got to get a bigger tank. I wanted to get a 125 gallon anyway, now I guess this will help me speed it up... thanks for ALL the advice guys.

i know when i say this everyone is going to think i'm crazy but i feed my fish throughout the day, i feed them meaty foods once in the morning and then feed them pellets throughout the day too many times to count, i have been successful with this technique for 1 and a half years!

Good thread about why you shouldn't keep tangs in a small tank.:)
I feed mine about every other day. But I put in a this sheet of seaweed select on a daily basis.

I feed once a day as well. Feeding your fish once a day in the 40 gallon though, and you will run into nitrate problems very quickly. A bigger tank is definitely needed, soon, not only for your tank chemistry (nitrate level) but for the happiness of the fish, like already mentioned.

It is always better to spread the amount of food over several feedings. This is especially beneficial for reef grazers like tangs. I wish I could feed my fish several times a day, but my schedule just doesn't allow it! If you want to increase the number of feedings, make sure to adjust the amount of food per feeding accordingly.
