For the nano cubes you should remove everything in the back. Except perhaps the carbon. Get rid of the bio-balls, sponges, filter blocks, ceramic rings, all of it. It just collects crap and other detritus and will end up polluting your water down the road. A lot of folks put live rock rubble in the back, but I keep mine bare. I believe even live rock rubble could collect a lot of detritus.

I washed the sponge last night. I have taken out the biballs and ceramic rings before even starting the tank. I am planning on washing the sponge out every 2 weeks or so. Is this ok? What are the filter blocks?

I am using that as vague term. There are sponges or filter blocks in both the first and second chambers. You can leave them in there if you wish, but the general consensus is you will run into trouble down the road. You will run into a real mess whenever you clean them and pull them out.

yeah if you leave the sponges in they collect alot of debris so when you pull them out do it quick and put them in a bowl or something...otherwise you'll dump a lot back in the tank...talking from expeirence( i did it once)
