Hey guys and gals,
I just got my 90g tank in TODAY!! YAY...so excited to get started...here's the equipment i have just to fill u in
90g tank
30g to be sump
mag drive pump
4 powerheads @ 850gph each
some lighting and etc
anyways...on to my questions and concerns :p
1) my sump
i have the sump...and if u were to look at it from the side...starting with the edge of the tank...all the partitions...and then the end of the tank it would look like...
l l l l l
l l l
(gee that didn't show up as well as i thought it would...)
anyways... i have 3 compartments that i have NO IDEA what do do with...ive been researching and i think the middle will have the heaters and some live rock...and one of the ends will have the pump...but what should i do with the third..?
2) my powerheads...
i have 4 rated for 850 gph each....and its a 90g tank...do u think this will be too much? how should i set them up? how many should i use? just put one in the top left corner and one in the bottom right corner?
3) should i get a skimmer?
ps it is going to be a reef tank setup.

sump goes <input><baffle><skimmer, heater, live rock><baffle><return> you may be able to put the heater in the return chamber and if you get an "out of sump" skimmer you can put its pump in the first chamber so you can have more rock and maybe even some macro algae.
I just got a tiny sump (like 5-7 gallons probably, i'd have to measure it) for my 56, I'm going to be running it at 100-150 gph as a fuge

to elaborate on the PM that I sent: I would do this:
1. Water from tank to sump enters first chamber. Allow this water to pass through some sort of filtration (LR, filter floss, etc) I run it through a filter sponge that my sump came with and then through carbon media and a little LR. This is just my preference.
2. Heater and protein skimmer in second chamber.
3. Return pump. Some people put more LR in this chamber, I do not.
2) my powerheads...

How much gph is you pump rated for? To give you an idea, I run 5500gph in my 155. I think 4 powerheads that are that strong might be too much. As for placement, it is personal preference. A lot depends on the layout of your rocks and the type of fish/corals you intend on keeping. Personally, I dont like PH's lower than half way in the tank, I'd rather angle them down than place them low
3) should i get a skimmer?
YES! I'd take a look at an ASM G2. I run a G3 and love it.
ps it is going to be a reef tank setup.
