So how small do these nano tanks go?
I might like to get one for my dad to put on his desk, and mabee get him into this hobby.
The size is a selling point for him.

I completely disagree with small tanks hard to keep. I have had a 2 1/2 gallon next to my computer for well over 2 years. It has be very stable and easy to keep. I perform appx. 1/2 gallon water change weely. I keep softies a couple snails crabs and a yellow clown goby. Things will over grow and need to be kept in check, just removed some gsp, they grow like weeks. I love this little tank.

Here is a shot from several months ago.

I don't have this running anymore but never had an issue with it. Just wanted to move everything over to a 5 gal instead. Its a 1 gal. Daily topups are a must along with weekly water changes too.

I was thinking something like 5 gal would probably be about right. a pair of clownfish, a cleaning shrimp, few snails and hermit crabs, and an aneome. throw in some LR and that would probably be about it. That wouldnt be too much trouble would it?

One fish, no anemone the tank is to small for one and clowns don't need one to survive either. They should be in a tank that has matured for at least 6 months too.
Rock, some soft corals, 1 fish, crab, snail, shrimp would be nice.....

heat is often considered a bigger issue. I have a 5.5 I use for a small QT tank from time to time, and when I run a powerhead in it the temp has a tendency to climb.
Hey Lmecher, do you have plans drawn up for that custom overflow back you did on the 2.5g in the pic? I was really considering doing something like this....wanna see if our plans look similar.

Like Debbie said, they need daily top offs and weekly water changes to keep the water quality in line. They aren't hard to keep, IMO, but you have to maintain them properly because the water quality will go south in a hurry if you don't.

One of my all time favorites is from C Est Ma on another site.
5.5 gallon, no filtration other than the live rock and sand. She had a pair of Green Banded Gobies that were constantly having young. There was a plate coral propagation site on one of here rocks that would put out a new plate coral once in a while. She was to me the consumate let the tank and critters do what they do reefer, always amazed at what was going on good or bad with the critters in her tank.

No plans, I can take a photo of the back if you'd like.
