I would save half of the filter material and not switch the entire media at once. Same thing when you clean it. This is why I use two canisters. One I clean, and the other I leave alone and alternate them. This allows for the good bacteria to always keep up with the bioload.
The reason I do this is, I noticed that when I cleaned my canister I had a small ammonia spike, when I asked about it, I was told that if I switch out my media when I clean the canister I destroy allot of my good bacteria and it takes time to rebuild. So from then on I used two.
If the old canister is still usable…keep it running until the other can break in and build some good bacteria up, or like me just run the two and alternate cleaning. I don’t think it is wise to replace the filter and keep doing tests to watch for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate spikes..that’s crazy and dangerous for your critters..
Possible, but I have never seen it. Could be the new media removes any small wastes that would get stirred up in my tank, but like I was saying never seen a bump up because of changing media.
