how to cycle a QT Tank

Hi i was just wondering how you cycle a QT Tank. I know i should have bare bottom floors so how does bacteria grow on the ground. Or can it still? How do you begin the cycle. can i just drop a live rock in there? after it is cycle. what will be the source of ammonia? should i leave live stock in there constantly? Thanks

plastic or pvc and the glass and filters will house some bacteria, , but i would not use lr, it will only die off when you perform hypo or use meds, we have some dead coral inours, and to keep it with bacteria, we use the filters out of our main tank and put them in(when we started it, we had a filter on the main tank) and drop in some food pellets regularly
