how to cycle QT?

Hi i was just wondering how you cycle a QT Tank. I know i should have bare bottom floors so how does bacteria grow on the ground. Or can it still? How do you begin the cycle. can i just drop a live rock in there? after it is cycle. what will be the source of ammonia? should i leave live stock in there constantly? Thanks

I heard of some people adding a pinch of flake food now and then into the empty QT tank...
As for the damsels, won't they become territorial, and attack newly acclimated (and weak) fish?
