How to filter this tank???

I'm setting up a 55 Gallon brackish water tank as a father/daughter project with my eight year old daughter Joanna. I bought the 55 used and it came with an old Magnum 200/220 Cannister filter that works fine.
Kim, the manager of the very good lfs that I buy from said that the magnum will wor fine for mechanical/chemical but stated that I need a sponge filter or a wet/dry for biological.
Both Joanna and I would like to upgrade this to a saltwater FOWLR or Reef when she is a little older and better able to take care of it, so I need to prepare for this.
But with the lower salinity a skimmer and LR will be useless.
Any ideas?

why not just do the fowlr now???
it would probably be easier, and there is alot more she will want to do with salt than brackish water
a fowlr is pretty easy to set up and maintain you can get a skimmer and some rock and you are pretty much set up
instead of buying a good filter like she reccomends, get the skimmer
you already need the salt and test kits
a fowlr is easy to set up and fairly easy to maintain
