How to get good pics?

I can't seem to get pics as good as the pics I see on this board. What type of lighting do you get the best pics in? Do you leave the room lights on or off, do you leave the tank lights on or off, do you use a flash? I try different things but they don't seem to match what I am seeing here. I have 2 digital cameras that I use a Canon Powershot G2 and I Digital Elph S400. What shoud I do?
Thanks

High resolution, like 1600 and then "trim" rather than resize your pics...
Hold camera right up on the glass so you don't get a "flash"...(full tank shots No Flash)
Whether you use flash or not depends on the effect you want MH, Actinic, dark tank with or with out flash...
Shoot a "bunch" of shots and angles and ONLY post your BEST pics...:D

I am only gonna ask, because I didn't know myself...
Do you know what where, and how to use the "macro" button??
If this is elementary to you, don't get mad. I had no idea for a long time. It was when I went to purchase a new camera that the sales man had to explain it to me.:D

I never did use the macro function on my G2, but I will try. Also I allways take my pics in the highest resolutions but still seem to be too bright and not as deep as what I have seen. I'll keep trying.
Thanks

You should have a button with a flower on it. That's the macro. When I try to get close ups, if I forget to press the macro button, my camera wont focus. I bought a Fugi because it has super macro also. As close as I can possibly get my lens it will take the pic, And I do that high resolution thing you were talking about and some come out pretty good.
Some cameras wont let you use flash with the macro on, so have your flashlight ready.
