how to go to a bigger tank

i love the 5gallon but i know i can find a 10gallon for cheaper and the coral would be much happier with more room for me to adjust the flow when i get my new powerhead as well as the 18inch 36watt current usa lights. I have a few questions then...in regards with this possible move which would eventually lead to another move over the summer into a 20 or 15 long
I feel that i cant control the flow at all in this little tank and its causing me to have cyano issues with several dead spots but i feel like a powerhead would be too much and too big in this tank.
I wanna get a 10 gallon for under 10$ or i wont do it. If and when I find one i was going to fill the new tank with 6 gallons of new water. Then move my coral and fish and sexys to a bin with about 1 gallon of water. Then drain the rest of the tank water into a bucket and add it to the new tank. Move the rocks over to the new tank with the filter and heater. Then move the fish coral and sexys to the new tank. Add in the last 1 gallon. This would leave me with 8-9 gallons of water in the tank. The next week i would then take out 1 gallon and add in 2-3 until the tank was full.
Would this plan work well? Also do i need to buy new sand? If i got dead sand could i just put in a scoop of the sand from my old tank?
How would you guys reccomend i do the move? I want to do it over christmas break if i do it so that way i have plenty of time to do it and wont have school to worry about.

ok here's what you need... 2 5gallon buckets with power heads..
drain tank water out of tank into bucket... put as much rock in there too... put the rest of the rock in the other bucket and move some water over to cover it... split the livestock between the buckets..
add all your sand from the current tank to the new one and mix in new sand or preferrably new established livesand.. and cover it about an inch with tank water. after it settles, add the existing rock and new cured&established rock to the tank. add existing water and old water... let it run for awhile... add the livestock. The important thing is making sure that the sand settles, because that's where all the nasty stuff is that could hurt stuff potentially. You may get another diatom bloom but no biggie.

so you would recommend using the old sand? In that case i was thinking i would scoop all the sand out and mix it with a new 5-10 pound bag (live sand) to account for the bigger tank.
Would it be ok to slowly increase the amount of live rock over time? I wanted to let the tank settle down for a week or two before i add new rock so that way the new rock wont mess things up too much
