How to keep your Seahorse Healthy?

All of us continue to search for causes and solutions to save our seahorses when they get sick. Some of us have been successful, some of us have not.
For the past 2 months I've been caring for a Koran Angel with hole-in-the-head; the owners wanted someone to take the sick fish off their hands. I knew exactly what meds to use, and what causes this ailment. I purchase the meds and changed the fish's diet. Today the Angel is 95% healed. Only a few small dots remain....these few spots may remain as scars, but I never once doubted that the fish would recover.
After keeping seahorses for almost four years I can certainly select or describe what a healthy seahorse should look and act like. I think most if not all of us could list, describe, diagnose just about anything that has to do with keeping seahorses. What I do not like is that I know that if my seahorse gets sick there is little chance of survival. Treatments that have worked for some of us do not work for others.
What I would like to do is have everyone post their experiences and treatments they used when their seahorses were ill. I'm looking for any consistency in our experiences, that may help show which meds/treatments work best. Here are a few questions, please add more:
1.) How long did you have your horses before it got ill?
2.) Did you put it into a QT before introducing it to the DT?
3.) What/ if any signs did you seahorse show it was ill?
4.) What made your seahorse sick? Parasite?...Bacteria?
a. Ectoparasites (External Parasites)
b. Endoparasites (Internal Parasides)
c. Exophthalmia ("Pop Eye")
d. External Gas Bubble Disease
e. Flesh-Erosion Disease
f. Internal Gas Bubble Disease
g. Pouch Emphysema
h. Snout Rot
5.) What meds did you use to treat your seahorse?
6.) If the treatment was successful, what meds or method
did you use?
7.) What would you do differently for your next seahorse?

Please post your with experiences and treatments. By compiling this information I am hoping to find correlation from our experiences to expose the causes of illness.
These are some examples of questions that i think would help. Please feel free to add

I had no
success what so ever using these meds
7.) What would you do differently for your next seahorse?
After much research and experience I am still grabbing
at straws trying to figure out how to prevent and treat
sick seahorses.

I'll post later tonight after babies are in bed with the names / species / diagnosis / treatment/ and if their still with us.

ok .... heres my list, dregging up the past but if it'll help anyone I'll list them and my newb mistakes [theres alot]
1st horses were dwarves -still going strong working on the 4th generation in a 10g and 5 g hex will house babie erectus or reidi fry [ which ever get there first]
My first big horses were kelloggi, 60g hex which I didn't realise would have such a dissolved o2 issue....unfortunatly they both passed but realised my stupid mistake and added lots of airlines, a good powerhead , double the filtration needed etc, symptoms were snicking at nothing , extending there snouts....almost looked like a stuck trigger
My hex erectus tank [after problems fixed ] -chuck norris[ female], 6 months old decided to snick a bristle worm at breakfast when I was getting kids ready for school....It twisted around her snout , she struggled for a couple mins then spit it out , I got the rest off her face....she was fine for 2 months, then she got an infection....started in her snout then extended to around her face....triple sulpha was too late to save her....maybe if I started it after the worm????? My poor girl
Same tank...My ditzy male that was deprived o2 during a choking incident ....saved him using a baby med. dropper as a suction against his snout, took about 8 times till the large piece of sand came out.....he's a little bit slow , but he';s still with me so

same tank ~male with gas bubbles in his pouch , jackie chan...aka romeo....He was positivly bouyant , and had a very hard time eating upside down....get a bobby pin that has the small plastic bubbles on the end -NOT the flat sided ones , get your male to attach his tail around your pinky , invert him at a 45 degree angle , take a deep calming breath and very gently start massaging the pouch opening with the small end , not the loop end....gently ....might take 1 minute might take five....If he fights he'll eventually relax....it's nerve racking, and I was shaking but a small stream of bubbles should come out , but don't force it in , no jabbing....remember , 45 degree angle , head down , tail "almost" up...If need be do it in a deep mixing bowl , sg and temp to match.

same tank - 60g erectus....my oldest is a female , we call her spectacles because she looks like wears glasses , 4 + years and never had a problem with her [ knock on wood] my others are 2-4 years old
reidi tank - aside from the males getting excited and air in their pouches ,they've been pretty healthy.....I always qt a new pony, especially one going into a established tank for at least 2 weeks [ reidi / erectus] ....now my kelloggis are on their own tread...
silly ponies, just happy their still with us

1.) How long did you have your horses before it got ill?
4.5 years
2.) Did you put it into a QT before introducing it to the DT?
No, they were the first inhabitants
3.) What/ if any signs did you seahorse show it was ill?
Not eating and rapid breathing, constantly had to have his pouch evacuated
4.) What made your seahorse sick? Parasite?...Bacteria?
a. Ectoparasites (External Parasites)
b. Endoparasites (Internal Parasides)
c. Exophthalmia ("Pop Eye")
d. External Gas Bubble Disease
e. Flesh-Erosion Disease
f. Internal Gas Bubble Disease
g. Pouch Emphysema
h. Snout Rot
Age I believe....since the average horse life span in captivity is 5 years.
5.) What meds did you use to treat your seahorse?
Evacuated the pouch and tried to get him to eat live shrimp.....he didn't go for it.
6.) If the treatment was successful, what meds or method
did you use?
none
7.) What would you do differently for your next seahorse?
Nothing. But incidentally my female horse in this tank followed shortly after by about two weeks. In this case I would have got her a male mate as I think she passed on on due to her "life partner" not being around....just my thoughts.
I just set up my bio cube with horses again and already lost my male (first three days). I believe it was due to acclimation...but not sure, there were no signs. Still have the female though and will be adding a mate this week.

My first seahorse was a H. Kuda which I purchased from my LFS, was fine for four months.
Purchased friend for H. Kuda 2 weeks latter from my LFS, died in a week.
a pair of female H. Kuda, Purchased form Monalisa's LFS, lived 1 mth.
Order H. Kuda from online, Died in 2 days.
Last purchase was the four female Kuda I tried to revive, they died within two months due to unsuccessful med treatments.

My first horse was a female Kelloggi.
1.) How long did you have your horses before it got ill?30 days.. sad I know
2.) Did you put it into a QT before introducing it to the DT? No but I so wished I had.
3.) What/ if any signs did you seahorse show it was ill?
One day she was fine.Eating and dancing when I came near the tank.Hunting for food on the rocks all day.Normal seahorse stuff.
The next day she stayed hidden and did not eat.Minimal eye movement.Normal breathing. No external signs of parasites of Vibro infection. The only thing I noticed was she kept sticking that little bone that comes out when seahorses feed.Could have been something wrong with her throat? They next day she was dead.
4.) What made your seahorse sick?
I have no clue. I did learn that my salt level was off as my hydrometer was broken. But the salt level was only 1.026 so it was only up a few points.
5.) What meds did you use to treat your seahorse?
Didn't have time for meds. She went downhill so fast with no signs of something wrong.
6.) What would you do differently for your next seahorse?
Everything....lol...I would dedicate a tank only for horses. Never buy Kelloggis again. Have a larger tank for them. Buy 2.

Thank you all for the information. The more info you can add the more successful I will be finding reoccurring problems.

The main problems I see here are buying horses from lfs. You dont know where they came from and what was in the tank before you bought them.
Most lfs have net/pen raised horses and must be treated as wild caught horses. Also mixing suppliers. This should not be done with out proper QT of the new horses.

Currently struggling to get my seahorse healthy.
not working..
she is struggling to breathe and is very worn out from battling what ever is wrong.
She was fine this arvo at 4:30pm, eating and swimming around, coming to the front of the tank when ever i was near. Now she is struggling to hitch and even breathe. She has lost some of her bright yellow colour and i am finding bits or artemia which look like they are inside some sort of intestine. She stopped swimming at about 6:40pm after adding bi carb to lower the Ph to about 8 - 8.2 from 7. 8. something went drastically wrong as the Ph increased to about 7. 4, tank went very cloudy over time, bi carb was pre dissolved so didnt change the water colour until after, very confued. Slowly adjusted it back to about 7.8.
star fish inside tank doesnt also look good.
I would do a water change but it 11pm and I have no marine salt left.
Feeling very useless.
I have had her for 3 months.
she was bought from seaview aquariums. bred from seahorse australia sea horse farm.
the tank was set up for 10 weeks before buying her. there was no quarantine since she was the first inhabitant.
no idea whats happening.
no visible parasites, though i doubt that has anything to do with it.
I tried a fresh water bath.
It worked at first, but then she just went back to her state.
I am devastated.

I'm so sorry to hear this.
I don't have much experience with seahorses but have been reading everything I can get my hands on.
Do you have an airline in your tank? If she's struggling to breathe then I would make sure that it isn't because of low O2.
What are your water parameters?
You might want to start your own thread so that someone with experience will see it and give you some help?
