you will naturally get temp swings between night and day.
i've never used a chiller, but i keep my temp at 77 on my tank, and it only gets up to about 78 during the day, even during summer.

wow really. because this summer my tanks readings were definitely high.. they were in the 82 83 range.. my tank will go from 72 to 80 just like that.. and i am woirried about it.. i wish there was some kind of electronic device that could keep your tank at a constant temperature.. maybe it will be a breakthrough in vention i will come up with lol

It's hard to keep your tank at a constant temp, but a combination of a heater and chiller can help. I have a swing of 2 degrees. What do you have in your tank, by the way? A temp of 72 is a little low.

i have an angel, a blu hippo tang, and a saddleback clown.. also a lawnmower blenny and a scooter blenny.. and some invertsd..
really??? so what should the temp be>???

yes i do.. but i dont use it all the time because i thought the proper temp was anywhere from 72-78 degrees.. so i was always afraid of it being to high..

You find out what your high temp is and set your heater for that temp so at night it will keep it from dropping. My day time temp is 80-82 so my heater is set for 80. I use my ceiling fans to keep the room cool for day.

If your temp gets too hot then you will need a chiller and you can put it on a timer for day time only.

wait.
re-reading all of this.
if you have a chiller and a heater, then why are you having problems.?
your lights supply lots of heat during the day, and the chiller keeps that under control.
at nite, the lights go out and your heater helps keep the temp up.
am i missing something? your heater temp should be lower than your chiller temp.

no i dont have a chiller... and my heater sucks.. lol it doesnt work all that great i dont think the temper on my thermometer reads right....
during the summer i turn off my heater and just let the temp outside be the temp of my tank. but it is a fowlr tank.. not anything special.. yET!!

If your heater sux then get rid of it. I don't know what wattage you need for a 125 gal tank (possibly 300 or 400 watts maybe someone on here can tell you), but whatever the wattage is that you need I would split that in half and get two heaters. Put them horizontal on both sides of the tank hidden by rour LR.
Hope this helps,
Steve

I agree. I have 3 heaters in my 125 = 850w,but this is a Discus tank that is kept at 86 degrees.
I would get 2 300 watt heaters, and get titanium if you can afford them. They really are not that much more expensive ( if you shop in the right places
)
I would stay away from glass heaters too
