I have a 40gal tank I do 5 gal water changes and I get my water from the lfs. I'm trying to keep my salinity - 1.023-.024 but the water I get from the lfs is .021 do you have any suggestions on how much salt to add to raise it to .023 - .024? ( I got salt from my brother who has a saltwater tank so I dont have the instuctions) Thanks for your help.

First thing is to double check the water your getting from the lfs and make sure it's actually low.... You might want to consider bumping your salinity level above the 1.023-1.024 level as you had stated. You can run higher, but I know that is what text book states..... What type of hydrometer are you using to test salinity? If you haven't already I would suggest into purchasing a refractometer will give your more accurate reading than the swing arm type hydrometers.
To raise your salinity you would just need to add a little bit of salt at a time and check the salinity. I say a little since of what you said the initial reading from the lfs is. You won't get an accurate result right away, that is why people usually let their water change water sit at least 24hrs before changing, and there are other reasons as well for that too.....
Last if the lfs isn't charging you for the water keep getting it from them but you might want to consider purchasing and RO/DI unit and make your own water... Will pay for itself down the road.....
Add a little salt at a time to increase your salinity

I would suggest instead of adding freshwater to top off due to evaporation just add saltwater that is at the desired SG.... that way you wont exceed your desired setpoint and the change will be gradual... I would recommend against adding salt directly to the tank... :scared:

I would like to raise my salinity higher then 1.023 but I have a jawfish and from what I've read 1.023 is as high as I can go. I am using a swing arm, but will check on the refractometer though.
I wouldnt add salt to the tank just the 5 gal of water I'll be adding to the tank for the water change. My biggest worry is because it's a smaller tank changing out 5 gals can change the SG pretty fast & I dont want to lose snails or fish, I lost one of my snails and think it maybe because of SG change.
So how much salt per gal do you add to fresh RO water? I dont really have the room for a RO unit but I can buy the RO water for .30 per gal the saltwater is 1.00per. Thanks for your help.

to my own ? I add 2 1/2-3 cups of salt to 5 gals of water to get 1.023. I start with 2 cups once that's mixed well I add an addl 1/4 cup at a time till I hit 1.023.

raise .001 over 3 days. Using saltwater as topoff is the best/easiest way.
