Perfectly safe for a reef, and IMO, I recommend it.
It depends on what brand you are you to use.
I use ChemiPure Elite, always have.
I used to just keep a bag that was sized properly for our tank (instructions will tell you how much to add) in a high flow section of the sump.
I now keep it in a reactor.

I built a really easy "reactor" out of pvc, very simmilar to the magnavore simplicity reactor. The carbon sits in a filter bag within the cahmber; small powerhead forces water through the bottom and out the top.

using carbon is perfectly fine in a reef tank. just make sure to change it out every 2-3 weeks to prevent detritus from settling on the bags. also, use high quality carbon. the cheaper ones could leak phosphate and do more harm than good.

Carbon is perfectly fine to use regardless of tank type.....Carbon is also used more efficiently if used in the "active" mode; meaning water forced through it rather than water running over it....

i put it were the water enters the sump, and the nylon keeps trapping air and expanding like a balloon. this makes the water run over it. :( i dont know how to stop this.i may have to rethink my idea. i put a piece of egg crate in the nylon to keep it spread our kinda like the carbon filter cartridges. this isnt working like i imagined. well i guess its back to the drawing board.

Why not just purchase a Phosban reactor and run carbon in it that way? They are cheap and the carbon would be used effectively as well......

would you run the carbon in the Phosban all the time or only as needed?? Like every few days for a few hours??

This is what I do and I run it constantly. My water has never been so clear. I never really had an issue with nitrates, and have always ran Carbon (Chemi Pure Elite just in a high flow spot of the sump) and there is no comparison to how much better it works through the reactor.
