how to work my overflow

I just got a new overflow the hang-on kind with a u-tube. How do you get the u-tube to suction water to the back part where the water returns to the sump? I can not figure it out. I am wondering if I need something that was not in the box?
I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Ther are a couple ways to do it. First you have to have water in both the front and back part of the overflow box.
Then you tank a small airline tube and insert it to the top of the U-Tube. Then you just suck. The water will rise in the tube and your syphon will be created. You MUST have water in both parts of the over flow.
The other way, you still have to have water in the front and back Then you fill the tube with water. Take plastic wrap and cover the ends of the water filled U-Tube. Carefully place the tube in the overflow and then remove the plastic wrap. Once water starts to flow over the overflow in the tank the syphon will be started.
