You prepare your water that you are going to change in a clean bucket I use a sterile rubbermade bucket 45 gallon size. i then fil the bucket with water with a power head and heater. i have it marked so I change 35 gallons at a wack. Then i add my salt so that I come up with the right salinity. Once the water is up to temp and mixed enough. i drain my tank to were i also have it marked to 35 gallons. i then place a pump in my bucket and pump it into my tank. It is very easy to do.

Its easy. For hypothetical situation (since you did not leave any info on your tank) lets say it 100Gal, and your going to do a 25% water change that 25gal.
First go out to local HD or some other place and get 10 5gal buckets, go to LFS and get enough salt to make 30gal or more of water, and go to the store and buy 30+ gal of RO or DI water.
Make up your saltwater in 5 of the 5 gal using your new salt, and RO or DI water. Test its pH, temp, and salinity making sure its same or very close to what is in your tank. You may have to warm up the water a bit by putting hot water into some of the containers that your RO/ DI water came in and placing them in the buckets this will warm up the water. The pH should be around 8.2 and that’s about what your tank should be.
When your water is very close to the right temp drain water from your tank into the other 5 gal buckets. Try to skim from the top because this is were nasty stuff floats around. Once you have removed around the same amount that you have ready to put back in just slowly start to add the new water. Its much easer if you have a sump but you can poor it right into the tank just do it slow. If you need to make up more water due to spillage or what ever do it in the new water buckets.
When you first start this process it will take a while. As you get more and more water changes under your belt it will start to go by faster and faster. I try to do 5% - 10% every week so I don’t have to fool with large amounts of water.

I have a 15-gallon sink in my mudroom that I put a heater and a power head in. So I installed 3/4" PVC in my walls from the sink to my tank. That way I just pump the water right out of the sink directly to the tank. No caring buckets back and forth.

Where do you live JamesP? I am also in Northern California (Chico) and love visiting other people's favorite lfs. What store do you go to and what city?

krux -- I live in Redwood Valley which is about 10mins north of Ukiah. My LFS is in Santa Rosa, so I guess it isn't so local. There is one in Ukiah but it sucks.

Cool. Im going to Marin to visit a buddy. I'll cruise around Santa Rosa while im down there and check out the stores. I agree Ukiah was a letdown. Thanks for the tip.

krux - Cool, there's one at 1648 Piner Rd in North Santa Rosa, called Caesar’s. Pretty good stock of supplies and nice healthy tanks. Another one just off the freeway in Rohnert Park. (8492 Gravenstein Highway) It’s called Northbay Aquatics. Lots of fish.
Where does your bubby live in Marin? Most of my family lives there.
