How will I know when my DSB is working?

I have a 4 and a half month old 55 gallon, I was wondering when i could tell when it becomes active. I still have lingering green algae that I stir up alot on my sand. Is this bad for the dsb?

I occasionally stir mine a bit,And have never seen any bad results from it.And when/if notice the lack of nitrates in your system,It's wirking.You may also see small bubbles in the sand against the glass.This is nitrogen gas escaping.A DSB changes nitrate to nitrogen...HEY,What are the chanses of you gettin' hold of a couple tickets to the RACE for me this year????I got four seats for both races in Michigan,and the the CART race.But would love to go to that one....
