How many gallons do you have? They grow relatively slow, but overall it is going to be a fair sized fish with a big bioload. I have mine in a 120, but you could get away with smaller if you get a small fish and it would probably be ok for a couple years. IMO you could probably start with a 55 if you have a huma that is only a couple inches or so and it could stay there for a couple of years. In a years time I don't think mine has grown half an inch. With this size tank I would probably have it as the only inhabitant however, they can be very aggressive, and it does not give others much room to work with.

One thing I noticed with my Huma is that the smaller the tank, the more agressive it is. When I had it in the 65gal, it was pretty mean to all the other fish. Then in the 150gal, is was really passive except during feeding. So I think larger is better as far as tank size.

Definately...I can't really think of a situation where larger is not better...aside the cost factor.

Just like jails; the more crowded, the more tension, the more fights. I also agree with Frank & Estelle's kid, George, above. I've seen very small (2" or so) humas terrorize and/or kill a tank full of fish many times their size. They are beautiful, fascinating fish; but are not the harmless little darlings that appear in most lfs lately.
