Hey everyone, is a Humu Humu considered reef safe? I know it might eat some hermits but how about coral and clams. Would those be safe with it? Thanks!

Can't say I know from personal experience, but from everything I've read, I'd give it a definite 'No'.

Can you elaborate a little? Like what do they do that make them not reef safe. I was reading the FAQ on WetWeb and it doesn't mention anything about them eating coral or clams. It says they may eat snail and hermits, overturn small rocks, pick on small fish.

The Humu Picasso Triggerfish needs a varied diet of meaty foods including; squid, krill, clams, small fish and hard shelled shrimp to help wear down their ever growing teeth.they will constantly pick at hard and soft corals

The reason I asked is because I woke up this morning and didn't see my hooded fairy wrasse and he's always up before the lights even come on. Then I went to look in his sleeping space and he wasn't there. So immediately I look behind the tank and there he was on the floor. Must have jumped out during the night. This makes it the 3rd time he jumped out, the first 2 I was there and put him back in. Now I know what they mean when they say these guys jump.
So now I was looking for another fish for my tank. I don't want anything small because in a few months I'll be changing over to a 150gal FOWLR, where I'll transfer most of my current fish, plus I'll add a Humu Humu, Emperor Angel, some tangs. I wanted to know if I could get the Humu now. But I guess I'll wait until the big tank is set up.

There have been lots of Huma questions lately. They're beautiful and personable fish. They seem to be plentiful and inexpensive. But, no matter what size, these are aggressive triggers and can go from nice to monster overnight. Most triggers will chomp anything that even appears edible. IMO, the only triggers I would consider "reef safe" are the blue jaw (blue chin) and very pricey crosshatch. Others have worked, but there exceptions to everything. I think it would be hard to find an experienced reef-keeper who would take a chance with his beautiful tank, by introducing any trigger. (Except, maybe, a blue jaw.) Also, if you're doing a FOWLR, I wouldn't keep the Huma with any lionfish.

Don't forget my Sargassum Steve, although I wouldn't put it past him to munch a small crab or snail if the opportunity arose

It is my personal experiance that humu humu will nip corals . I had mine take out a colony of polyps . I thought that the small corals would be ok but they did not last but a day or two .

...and chomp clams, which were in the original post by RCreations.

How about a Niger, is that more reef safe? My LFS has a really nice looking Niger, pretty small about 3".

Why not check SWF.C at the left & other online dealers; they'll tell you what's reef safe---it sounds like you really don't want to believe the pros at the dealers or the experiences of folks on this forum. I know you really want a trigger in your reef. IMO (again) Blue Jaw, Sargassum, or crosshatch. You'll eventually find someone who says a Huma or Niger is reef safe, but that advice is contrary to what I read from everyone in the business and on this forum whom I consider to be real experts. Why not post a question about triggers and reef tanks in the reefkeepers section of this site? You'll be more likely to hear from the folks who really know reef tanks. This section is really directed toward the aggressive fish; and we often want to find a good reason to keep our triggers, even under circumstances when we shouldn't.

.....Niger's may work, but they may not work.....Your best bet are the 3 SrFisher listed, and even they are no guarantee, you will find people that have had Nigers, Humas, I have even heard of the usually nasty Clown Trig in a reef before (I would doubt it worked long term but who knows)...I would stick with the 3 best bets and of those usless you want to spend some $$$, go with the BlueThroat....When in doubt, play the odds.

Who said I don't want to believe you? If I didn't believe you, I would have just bought the Humu Humu. But since I believe the majority here are experienced, that's why I'm asking. If the majority say the Niger is not reef safe, that's fine, I won't buy one. Doesn't hurt to ask though.

I re-read my post; really didn't mean to be so harsh. I'm seldom so grouchy! When I have to type and think, I can get way off base;especially with a few kids in the house...sorry!
