For a Beretta over and under you'll pay way over $900.00 if not more. If you just starting out Id go with a Remington 870 youth. Youll pay between 200 - 300 bucks. With enterchangable chokes this should get you throught most upland hunting. Not sure about where you are but in Texas you have to have taken the hunters safety education program before you can hunt.

Personaly if it was me I would start out with something a little less expensive. But that is up to you. If you want to pay that then its still a good gun. My problem with expensive guns is Im to scared to scratch it or get it dirty hunting. My remington Iv dropped in mud and water. I just cant do that to a 1200 dollar gun. Excpecialy when duck hunting in muddy lakes.

That was my very first gun also. The model 870 is really impressive. Consistant performance, easy takedown and cleaning, cheap price. What else could you ask for?

Not really. I use a 12 on all my upland game. Upclose shots could however desimate the bird though depending on what type of "shot" your using.. 20 is a good load as well. I use 12 cuz I cant hit with a flip sometimes.

I have a Pintail Baretta 12 Guage with a couple of different barrels.
It's an awesome hunting weapon.

You can put me in for a vote on the 870
They are so damned tough
I know that the italian bit of art and science "Beretta's" are so incredible, I think that using the 870 for a few years and then make the step up to the expensive firearms.
I finally stepped up and got the Beretta Onyx two years ago
what a sweet shooting shotgun, but it was made sweet by shooting model 12 pumps and browning pumps until I could upgrade to the O/U.
Learn on the cheaper ones and upgrade after that!
Just opinion
I certainly could not have afforded a Beretta when I was 16.

There are an incredible amount out there to look at
What do you want to do
Targets
Hunting
Combo?
You have semi-auto
Lever action
single shot
too look into!
Hold on a sec
Have you taken your hunter safety classes yet?
If not then you need to get that done first.
You should find plenty of instructors there who would be more than willing to bring thier's in for you to try out then you can see which type you like the best.
On the friend or relative with you while you are hunting, I would consult the Game and fish web site in NJ, I am sure that is answered in the FAQ. I know most states do not require it, but that person had better not get caught carrying that firearm! Of course handing the firearm back and forth as you safely cross fences, etc, is not the same.

Id go with a Marlin 22 lever action 22MAG. They are so much fun and all around for anything small and plinking. Or a ruger 10/22 semi-auto. About 200 bucks.

yes i took my hunters saftey course already, and for the 22 that will mostly be for target, i found one of my marlin magazines and i seem to like the model 880sq bolt action rifle

Ruger 10/22 is an awesome .22! They are extremely reliable and have a million different accesories. I dont know how many thousands of shells i have shot through mine and it is awesome!
