Before adding the sand it might be worth doing a search on this site for sand bed depths. From what I have read you want to have less than 2 inches or more than 4 inches. Apparently can get some ammonia pockets or something. I'm not sure how much of a factor that be at a half inch over two inches but I myself would not risk it.

Sand beds in intermediate depths (2-4 inches) can be problematic. Too deep for critters to keep clean, and not deep enough for a deep sand bed's bacteria.
