when using hyposalinity to cure ick , how salty should the water be.what should my hydrometer read.I planto use a seperate tank to put the fish in. will this help or am i wasting my time. thank you to anyone who replies.

Well,you can't just put fish in a tank with that low of salinity after being in a tank with normal salinity.There is a process to it.First,it has to be a fish only tank,only fish.Then over a weeks time,you lower it down to 1.09,no lower,no higher.It has to be exactly 1.09.This will cause the ick to burst and die.Ick will even make it with the salinity at 1.10.You keep it at that for 3 weeks then slowly bring it back up.If your treating a fish only tank,you could also use copper.Also,a U.V. steralizer is recommended.I say recommended because I don't have one but they do good from others experience.HTH

hey goby if you would have read carefully, i mentioned i planned to use a different tank and i know what a fish only tank is.

As beth said research this before doing it. A mistake trying this will be a disaster, and yet there is all the info you need in the search area of this board.

thanks beth, i took your advice on the search and i found the answer to my question. i realize that alot of the same questions on this board are asked over and over,and most of the time you can find the answer by doing a search. for some reason i just never paid attention to this option .thanks again.

I would not and did not count on a hydrometer to be accurate enough for hypo treatment. A refractometer should be used. At the very least test your hydrometer against a refractometer. It must be dropped to 1.009 maybe 1.007 for a short period. It can be dropped over 2 or 3 days.
