I am really interested in started a saltwater tank but after reading the information on this web site, I am having second thoughts. I like the way the live corals and reef look in a saltwater tank, so, I was wondering if I could make a freshwater tank look just like a saltwater tank and use dead corals and dead rocks to make a reef. Would the freshwater fish appreciate that environment.

nmwolf, there is nothing you can do to a fw tank to make it look anywhere near as beautiful and colorful as a reef tank. This is only my opinion of course there are alot of beautiful fw tanks out there, and there are people, I suppose, that like fw better. I can tell you that the rewards with a reef tank are great.

Agreed. This forum will really help. If you do your homework and ask a lot of questions here, it is not that hard.
If you decide to go with freshwater anyway, do not put dead corals in the tank. I am not sure, but I think that might make the water too brackish. If you do, you should get Cichlids.
IMO, don't buy dead corals and support the people with chisels pulling these slow growing wonders out of the reef. Buy the fake ones. Then you can have any freshwater fish you want too.
