i just did an eight hour marathon of CRAZINESS to finish this cake. you would not believe how much work goes into these things. it's not quiiiiiiiite finished yet, there are 2 characters that are going on either side of the gate, and there's a little yellow flag that's going on the 2nd tier that says 'happy birthday,' but I just HAD to post it anyhow, bc i'm so happy with how it came out and i'm very much interested in what other people think!!

that is really amazing. do you build cakes professionally? my girlfriend really wants to get into cake design, shes always baking. for her birthday my parents got her an icing bag and some tips and i bought her a big thing of fondant (spelling?). im going to surprise her with an enrollment in a cake class as our LCS (local craft store... lol).

LoL, thanx! unfortunately, I do not ship my cakes. I will deliver to anywhere, but I will not ship - the postal services are not worthy. period. Been there, experimented with that, never again.

hah, ive seen how the shipping dept at my job handles anything with a fragile sticker. yeah.... i dont think a cake would survive being punted into the truck at the loading dock. if its a football sized package then its first and ten.

i do indeed do this professionally - this cake is for a 1st birthday taking place on saturday, but the b-day boy's aunt is coming to get it from me 2morrow, as she has to travel with it to Harrisburg tomorrow (about 3-4hours away). it's a FABULOUS idea to enroll your girlfriend in classes - there are so many tricks and trade secrets that you simply cannot learn on your own, but once someone shows you what to do it all becomes second nature. cake decorating is the most fun EVER!!!!!!!

she watches ace of cakes and all those cake competitions on tv. i have to remind her that those cakes are done by professionals with years of experience. shes not going to do lattice piping or sugar glass swimming pools her first day.
my favorite is the cake sushi.

you'd be surprised!! that's what i thought too, and then 3days into my first course, we finished our first 3tiered cakes. if she really likes to do it, she'll be making masterpieces in no time!!

is there any special tools or anything i can get her to help her out? shes been very good about not tourmenting me over the new tank build so i feel like i owe it to her. my parents already got her the icing bag and like 10 tips for her birthday.

icing bags and tips are a great start. i would wait a bit till she gets more into it b4 u buy her much more than that. the class she's going to take is going to require her to buy a good bunch of stuff too. but as far as what i use... i cannot live without my offset spatulas (anyone in any home-goods or craft store will know what this is), and i also swear by my kitchen-aid mixers... but those are business investemet-sized expenses. a good hand-held mixer might be nice. if she really gets into it, she'll need oodles of cookie cutters, silicone french rolling pins, a GOOD paring knife, silicone baking mats, tons of different sized cake tins....the list goes on and on and on....

her mom has a kitchen-aid mixer, i guess we could roll over there and "borrow" it. ill go over to the craft store tomorrow and enroll her and pick up a list of what they want her to get. ill buy it all and throw it in a gift basket or something.

That is cool

; hours and hours, no running, no jumping, etc. etc. etc. (I'm sure you know!). Anyway, nice job!
